Michael Chandler reflects on UFC 309 Loss to Charles Oliveira: “I beat him 9 out of 10 times”
A Disappointing Performance: “Two Out of Ten”
Chandler admitted his performance at UFC 309 fell far below his expectations. Speaking on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, he candidly stated, “I would give myself a two out of 10.” Despite Oliveira dominating most of the fight, Chandler nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback in the final round. However, a knee injury suffered in the first round compounded his struggles.
“It just was not the performance that I wanted, and it really sucks,” Chandler said. He was deeply disappointed with the gap between his potential and what transpired in the octagon. However, his confidence remains unwavering: “I believe I beat Charles Oliveira nine times out of 10.”

Revisiting the Oliveira Rivalry
The rivalry between Chandler and Oliveira has been a highlight of UFC lightweight history. Their first clash at UFC 262 saw Oliveira win the vacant lightweight title with a dramatic second-round knockout even after Chandler nearly finished him in the first.
Their UFC 309 rematch played out differently, with Oliveira controlling the fight for most of the rounds. Chandler’s late surge in the fifth round created some drama but wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Although Chandler’s losses to Oliveira now stand at 2–0, he remains focused on the future: “I have a 100 percent loss rate against him, so I understand why people might roll their eyes at that. But I’m excited to get healthy and give the fans the performance they deserve.”
Controversy Surrounding UFC 309
Adding to Chandler’s frustration were accusations of foul play during his comeback effort in the fifth round. Fans and commentators noted instances of fence-grabbing and strikes to the back of Oliveira’s head. Chandler denied these claims, calling them “untrue” and expressing annoyance at the narrative overshadowing his late-round push.
Despite the controversy, Chandler emphasized his focus on improving his performance and silencing any doubts in future fights.

Redemption and Determination
While Chandler’s rivalry with Charles Oliveira hasn’t gone in his favor so far, his confidence in his skills is unshaken. Determined to recover fully and prove himself, Chandler looks forward to returning to the octagon.
The UFC lightweight division is filled with razor-thin competition, and Chandler’s relentless determination makes him a fighter to watch. As fans eagerly await his next move, one thing is clear: Michael Chandler isn’t done, and his journey to redemption is far from over.
