Dalton Knecht Trade Rescinded: Lakers Guard Stays in Los Angeles
In a surprising turn of events, Dalton Knecht will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers after a trade that would have sent him to the Charlotte Hornets was rescinded. The Lakers officially announced on Saturday that the deal fell through due to a “failure to satisfy a condition of the trade.”
Lakers Keep Their 2024 First-Round Pick
The Tennessee basketball standout was originally included in a package deal that would have sent him to Charlotte along with Cam Reddish, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, and a 2030 pick swap in exchange for Hornets center Mark Williams. However, according to NBA insider Shams Charania, Williams’ failed physical with the Lakers was the key reason for the trade’s cancellation.
As a result, Knecht will continue his rookie season with the Lakers, who originally selected him No. 17 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. So far, the 6-foot-6 guard has been a solid contributor, averaging 9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and shooting 35.8% from three-point range in 20.7 minutes per game.

Knecht’s Impressive Rookie Season
Knecht has already had several standout performances in his debut season, including:
- 24 points and five three-pointers against Philadelphia (Jan. 28)
- 37 points against Utah (Nov. 19), where he hit nine three-pointers, tying an NBA rookie record
- A dominant 22-point scoring streak in a single game
His strong play even earned him a spot in the NBA Rising Stars event during All-Star Weekend.
Lakers’ Trade Strategy After Losing Anthony Davis
The Lakers’ failed trade attempt with the Hornets came after they made a blockbuster move, sending Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić. With Davis gone, the Lakers had been searching for a reliable center, which led them to target Williams in the trade market.
Now, with Knecht staying in Los Angeles, the Lakers remain thin in the frontcourt and will likely have to explore other trade or free agency options to fill the gap left by Davis.

Dalton Knecht’s Journey to the NBA
Knecht has had an incredible rise to the NBA, making a name for himself in college basketball. The Thornton, Colorado native was a standout at Tennessee, where he was named SEC Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American.
His scoring ability was undeniable, averaging 21.7 points per game and leading the SEC in scoring after transferring from Northern Colorado. His final season at Tennessee saw him rack up:
- 13 games with 25+ points
- 8 games with 30+ points
- 6 games with 35+ points
- A season-high 40-point performance
His journey started at Northeastern Junior College in Colorado, proving that hard work and perseverance can lead to NBA success.
What’s Next for Knecht and the Lakers?
With the trade deadline passing, the Lakers will move forward with Knecht as part of their roster. His ability to stretch the floor and provide perimeter shooting could prove valuable for a Lakers team adjusting to life without Anthony Davis.
